Quotes: 20 beauty-soaked quotes by men

An ode to men of words, this little collection houses quotes by some awesome male poets, film makers, spiritual teachers, authors, timeless movie characters and all round inspiring guys. So, let’s dub this the yang version and kick it off with my most loved Wayne Dyer wisdom 😉

”Everything you’re against weakens you. Everything you are for empowers you.”  ~Wayne Dyer

An excerpt from one of my husbands favourites:

”We’ve been led into a culture that has been engineered to leave us tired, hungry for indulgence, willing to pay a lot for convenience and entertainment, and most importantly, vaguely dissatisfied with our lives so that we continue wanting things we don’t have. We buy so much because it always seems like something is still missing.”-David Cain

”Perhaps the dragons of our lives are our teachers, only waiting to see us beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is a deep helplessness that wants to be healed. So you must not be frightened if a sadness rises up before you, larger than any you have ever seen. If bewilderment, like light and cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening with you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall”. -Rainer Maria Rilke

“Perhaps we don’t like what we see: our hips, our loss of hair, our shoe size, our dimples, our knuckles too big, our eating habits, our disposition. We have disclosed these things in secret, likes and dislikes, behind doors with locks, our lonely rooms, our messy desks, our empty hearts, our sudden bursts of energy, our sudden bouts of depression. Don’t worry. Put away your mirrors and your beauty magazines and your books on tape. There is someone right here who loves you incredibly, who is making room on the couch, who is fixing a meal, who is putting on your favourite record, who is listening intently to what you have to say, who is standing there with you, face to face, hand to hand, eye to eye. There is no space left uncovered. This is where you belong.”-Sufjan Stevens

”Begin doing what you want to do now. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand…and melting like a snowflake”. -Francis Bacon Sr.

”Everyone who terrifies you is sixty-five percent water. And everyone you love is made of stardust, and I know sometimes you cannot even breathe deeply, and the night sky is no home, and you have cried yourself to sleep enough times that you are down to your last two percent, but nothing is infinite, not even loss. You are made of the sea and the stars, and one day you are going to find yourself again”.  -Finn Butler

”If you knew that your life was merely a phase or short, short segment of your entire existence, how would you live? Knowing nothing ‘real’ was at risk, what would you do? You’d live a gigantic, bold, fun, dazzling life. You know you would. That’s what the ghosts want us to do – all the exciting things they no longer can”.     – Chuck Palahniuk

”Accept that not everyone will understand you, that every soul is it’s own equation. While you may be more than senseless gibberish to some, others will need only a single look to get a grasp of who you are. Never dull, dumb down or adjust yourself to fit somewhere you don’t belong”. Beau Taplin / Gibberish

”I trust in the universe to unfold as it should, to reveal my path and guide me along on my journey. But I also recognise that sometimes fate requires a little push. That while the  cosmos may provide me with the blueprint to my testing, it is my duty to get my hands dirty and build something of it”. Beau Taplin / The Blueprint

”What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?” – Rob, High Fidelty

”In the age of technology there is constant access to vast amounts of information. The basket overflows, people get overwhelmed, the eye of the storm is no so much what goes on in the world, it is the confusion of how to think, feel, digest and react to what goes on”. Criss Jami, Venus In Arms

”Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: YOU ARE ALL STARDUST. You couldn’t be here if the stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements – the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life – weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today”. – Lawrence Krauss

”The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays”. – Søren Kierkegaard

”Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got.” ― Steven Pressfield

”All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea — whether it is to sail or to watch it — we are going back from whence we came”. – John F Kennedy.

”What we seek, at the deepest level, is inwardly to resemble, rather than physically to possess, the objects and places that touch us thought their beauty”. Alain de Botton.

”The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match that of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.” Joseph Campbell

”The big questions is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.” – Joseph Campbell

“I’m tired of trying to fill up my empty spaces with things I don’t need and people I don’t like.”― Beau Taplin

And my hands-down, absolute favourite:

”At some point you have to own up to how Great you are, how beautiful you are, to how much inner dignity and potential you have. Drop the complaining about what other people didn’t give you or do for you, or how they mistreated you. Take repossession of your Self and you will rise to a level of greatness that has been yours all along.” Michael Bernard Beckwith

There were a good many of these that resonated with me. I think my favorite was Chuck Palahniuk’s quote. The part at the end about the ghosts wanting us to do what they no longer can.
