Sitting in meditation (actually sitting still in general) has never been my forte.
My mind ticks. My legs want to unravel. My arm will itch.
So imagine my relief when I realised that these apparent ‘rules’ that surround meditation are not in any way indicative of my meditative potential.
I’m proof that rules exist to be broken because when I finally started meditating in a way that suits me I attained a completely new sense of stillness. And stillness is the whole damn point.
Sometimes I can hear my heart beating in my ears.
Sometimes I can feel the room spinning.
During a reiki session and during a past life regression meditation, I’ve felt like I was being spun around, like a kid gearing up to play pin the tail on the donkey.
Energetic clear out?
Not sure, but it settles (thankfully) and I achieve sweet stillness.
What I’m finding through continuous practice is this:
Cos we all know that we already know what we think we’re seeking answers to on a deeper level, we just need to turn the world off for a minute so we can really hear ourselves.
Just last week I was sitting up on my bed, legs crossed, palms upright offering up all my fears around a topic. Within minutes a vision appeared of my mother in a forest. She waved her hand across the forest floor and beneath it a glowing green path appeared. This was the reminder she came bearing:
“Don’t wait for a reason to be appreciative. Appreciate just because you can.”
Here’s what I took from that: just because you can.
Love. Appreciate. Bestow gratitude. Be graceful. Hold your tongue. Be kind. Go out of your way. Leap. Practice pausing before you speak. Give someone else the stage. Just because you can.
For almost a year she’s greeted me in meditation standing on the top of a hill beneath a tree. It’s sunny, she smiles silently as she hands me a glowing green orb. Always glowing, always green, always smiling.
Just because she can.
I use this green power ball anyway I see fit. Sometimes I’ll cradle it. Sometimes I’ll visualise enshrouding somebody with it. Sometimes I give it to someone else.
When I feel I’m done I return it to her with a grateful nod and she takes it and leaves me with a knowing smile standing alone and contented on that sunny hilltop.
Since upping the ante with meditation, committing to alignment and working on some mental rewiring, residues of the spiritual realm in my reality are more tangible. Some of my dreams are incredibly lucid. My inner knowing is laser sharp. And don’t even get me started on the synchronicities…..
So, after working with the power of ALIGNMENT for a little while here’s what I know: when I ditch the doubt, give in to the authority of my highest self and roll with the cosmic waves my senses are strengthen, my trust is deeper and my path clearer.
Esther and Jerry will call it being in The Vortex. Gabrielle Bernstein would refer to it as the Art of Allowing. Pam Grout would excitedly exclaim that my ink jets are lined up!
So, how the hell do you achieve stillness and activate your heart centre when Instagram updates itself in the palm of your hand and FOMO has you cornered?
Here are my top resources for aligning with how you want to feel:
Good old fashioned movement can’t be beat when it comes to amping up the good feels. Training has always brought me mental clarity, and I admit I secretly love the soreness that comes after busting my comfort zone.
I’m 6 weeks into Kayla BBG and feeling incredibly strong and capable. I did Kayla after Bohdi was born and it was a great postpartum segue back into exercise but this time I can feel my intention and focus reflected in my strength and fitness.
For something new I’m learning to skip. Fast, double jump, criss-cross, one-legged then the other kinda skipping. Super hard, lots of whiplash (skiplash?) and SWEATY but very satisfying.
I’m bringing running back into the mix and love soaking up the endorphin rush. Oh, and follow @dogpound on Insta if you want to have the pants inspired off you.
I choose moments – sometimes they choose me, where I stop and imagine that intense waves of purity and love radiate from me. Sounds sappy but read on.
I’ll pick someone, conjure up the emotion of joy, direct it to that person and imagine their love levels topping up.
Using this I’ve turned the grumpy, always rushing deli lady into a beaming ball of mush when she spots Bohdi and I walking through the supermarket.
Try it. Mentally pick out a case study and get to work on them, watch the LOVE literally transform that persons energy around you. Pure magic.
Words are fully loaded emotionally charged weapons. Wield wisely.
Here are a few excerpts I’m mulling over:
“This is a time in history when it’s not enough to know, this is a time in history to know how.” ~ Dr Joe Dispenza
“A belief is just a thought you keep thinking’ ~ Esther Hicks. Absolutely love the heck out of this one).
”Don’t give away this power waiting to see what happens to the rest of the world when you can decide what happens in yours.” ~ Mike Dooley (an excerpt from Notes from the Universe).
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open” ~ Martha Beck
“The point of power is in the present moment.” ~ Louise Hay
On Spirituality: “The spiritual path is a constant preparation to respond to your personal world and to the greater field of life with an ever-growing sense of clarity, compassion, and courage.” ~ Carolyn Myss
On spiritual calling: “What a “calling” is not is a glamorous occupation or a guarantee of success. A “calling” is the equivalent of being drafted into a path of service on behalf of others, a signal that the time has come to “put your spirit to use in the world”. A “calling” is a test: Do you believe what you say you do or not? Are you a person of service or not? Are you someone who believes in love and in the power of good – or not?” ~ Carolyn Myss
Guiding Words: SOFT – has been one of the most powerful so far.
Being easy, relaxed, low-key and kind always feel right to me. Even when it looks like weakness, shyness, fragility or oppression. Being loud, opinionated and self-serving is easy. Choosing softness in speech, thought and behaviour is hard because we’re wired to watch our backs, to put ourselves first, to get our needs met, hustle, prove our worth and win at all costs. Being soft, quiet and unassuming won’t cost you what’s meant for you because what’s meant for you will always be yours, softness just makes the journey sweeter.
The purity, love and warmth that it emanates are not easily recognised in a noisy world but they are always felt. And how you feel is everything.
I’ve enjoyed tapping into the power of these, too: ADAPTABLE. CREATION (bestowed during meditation). TRUST and SURRENDER (as a duo). GRACE. IMMERSION. MOMENTUM. PERSPECTIVE. CHOICE.
